Gravest Crime Call to Action
Cover Letter to Civil Society Sign-on Letter in Support of Historic UN Declaration on the Gravest Crime Against Humanity
Dear Reparationists, Colleagues, and Partners in Justice!
On March 25, 2026, history was made. By an overwhelming vote of 123 nations, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution, championed by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana in his capacity as the African Union’s Champion on Reparations, declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
However, at a moment when the Global South stood in unified moral clarity, the United States government voted against this declaration. We write to you today because that vote does not represent us.
The Reparation Education Project (REP) is coordinating a national civil society sign-on letter to formally register that organizations across the United States stand in support of this historic declaration — and in alignment with the global call for truth, accountability, and reparative justice.
This sign-on letter is an opportunity to:
-
Affirm the accurate historical and legal characterization of the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialized chattel enslavement
-
Align with the African Union, CARICOM, and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States
-
Publicly demonstrate that U.S. civil society stands with the Global South — not in opposition to it
-
Strengthen the growing reparations ecosystem within the United States
Entities and individuals such as the Congressional Black Caucus, NAACP, National Urban League, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Attorney Ben Crump issued statements of support prior to the historic vote. This sign-on letter expands that chorus into a collective civil society voice.
We invite your organization to join us.

At this pivotal moment, silence is not neutral. Be counted among those who stand on the side of truth — and on the side of history.
In solidarity and struggle,
